Atlanta Dream Center

ABOUT THIS MINISTRY:  The Dream Center was founded in the summer of 2003 by Pastor Paul and Patty Palmer. The Dream Center is not only a church, but also a hub for many ministries. At the Dream Center, they have found that hands-on ministry is the best way for them to reach the lost for Christ. They are in Atlanta to serve God, whether it is giving hope to the hopeless, love to the hurting, or a hand to those in need. They, by the grace of God, are able to meet the needs of people in Atlanta with dozens of different ministries. Some are as large as Adopt-A-Block, where volunteers go to over 600 homes every Saturday and share God with over 1,000 people in just a matter of hours. Other ministries are never even seen by the public.

Volunteering at Atlanta Dream Center can be done in many different ways. Some people volunteer one hour, some one day, and others even one year. Click here to volunteer.

Atlanta Union Mission

ABOUT THIS MINISTRY:  Atlanta Union Mission is a Christian ministry that brings Christ's healing power to any person in crisis through programs of rescue and recovery. The Mission serves as many as 1,070 men, women, and children every day of the year with emergency shelter, residential recovery, and transitional housing.

Atlanta Union Mission was established in 1938 as a refuge for homeless and hungry individuals displaced by the Great Depression. Over the years, the Mission has grown from a single shelter in downtown Atlanta to six facilities, which provide emergency food and shelter, residential recovery programs, and transitional housing. Atlanta Union Mission provides emergency shelter to as many as 354 men, women, and children at two separate campuses.

Guests of the shelters are provided hot showers, clean clothes, nutritious food, and a safe place to sleep. Atlanta Union Mission provides residential recovery and transitional housing programs to as many as 716 men, women, and women with children. The residential recovery program offers a six-to-12-month Christian curriculum with individual and group counseling, life skills training, work therapy, and spiritual guidance. The 18-month transitional housing program continues the healing process. Clients live in a supportive, drug-free environment while working or pursuing further education as they transition to independent living.

Cobb Senior Services

ABOUT THIS MINISTRY: Since its creation in 1972, Cobb Senior Services has enhanced the quality of life for thousands of Cobb County senior citizens through nutrition, education, and recreation activities and programs. A department of Cobb County Government, Cobb Senior Services is staffed by 56 full-time and 43 part-time employees, as well as 900 community volunteers. MUST Ministries

ABOUT THIS MINISTRY:
MUST is a faith-based organization that for 31 years has been dedicated to providing services to persons in crisis while maintaining the person’s dignity. MUST is a place where one's faith can be put into action and where one can minister to the poor, the brokenhearted, and those who are in crisis - a place where "your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." Fredrick Buechner

No other organization offers the same range of services to help people in need: emergency shelter, transitional housing, meals, groceries, clothing, job readiness and placement, substance abuse counseling, financial assistance, children's programs, community support groups, access to free health care, and access to affordable housing. MUST services are open to everyone – men, women, children, families, disabled persons, mentally ill persons – regardless of income, race, or religious beliefs.

Throughout its history, MUST has created programs that are models for dealing with core problems in our community: recovery from homelessness and substance abuse; job preparedness and placement; housing for mentally ill people; and summer lunches and health programs for latch-key children. With many new programs and services geared to motivating clients to assume more responsibility and independence, MUST is striving to break the cycle of poverty in our community. MUST exists to fill the needs that others can’t. Our programs are created in response to cries for help.

Projects for Volunteers:

  • Prepare lunch for 150 homeless people
  • Wash MUST vans
  • Organize the clothes closets
  • Inventory the food pantry
  • Participate in special projects throughout the year

Contact the Volunteer Coordinator for information, or to be added to the email newsletter distribution list so that you will know about current needs and projects.

                                                                  The Extension

ABOUT THIS MINISTRY: The Extension was originally founded to provide a winter shelter for homeless men in Marietta. It was a direct and faith-based reaction to the death of a man who had sought shelter in a school stadium on a particularly cold night. As the shelter grew, its mission quickly broadened to include the treatment of the cause of homelessness, not merely the provision of a warm place to sleep. Most recently, they have added a new wing for homeless women in Cobb County. The most common cause of homelessness is addiction.

The Extension exists today as a year-round residence and recovery center for men and women (separate housing) who wish to be freed of their addictions. It is faith-based and offers additional hope to these men and women and their families by providing shelter, counseling, job assistance, and life skills training. The Extension addiction-treatment program uses the 12 steps of recovery and seeks to put Christ at the center of each new life, though no one is ever turned away for religious preference or lack thereof.

Residents must remain drug and alcohol free to stay in the program and are expected to work as soon as they are able to do so. The counselors seek to reunite families whenever possible. The Extension is directed by a voluntary board and operates through the generosity of donors, volunteers, occasional grants, and a small, dedicated staff. Click here to volunteer.

Projects for Volunteers (children can be included):

  • Prepare a breakfast or dinner for the approximately 15-20 men or women (depending on which Center)  living in the shelter
  • Work on a myriad of fix-up and renovation projects such as minor construction, painting, landscaping, or minor repairs
  • Provide Clerical and administrative assistance
  • There may be a list of needed donations that you/your group can collect over a period of time and bring with you on your day of service.
  • Facilitate Bible study and / or worship services
