Stephen Ministers walk one-to-one with someone through a hard season, meeting about once a week, backed by a team and ongoing supervision. Applications for the next class are open September 1-30. What is a Stephen Minister?
Stephen Ministers are trained leaders who provide one-on-one spiritual and emotional care focused on their care receiver’s needs. They offer care, support, encouragement, active listening, a caring presence, and prayer for people walking through a hard season, crisis, or loss.
Who should consider becoming a Stephen Minister?
Anyone who feels called to offer compassionate, Christ-centered care and is willing to complete training, maintain confidentiality, and serve faithfully should consider applying.
What training is required?
All new Stephen Minister candidates complete training before being commissioned. Training uses the Stephen Ministry curriculum and is led by one of North Metro Church’s most experienced Stephen Ministers. Classes run from January through May and meet most Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm at the Barrett Campus. New Stephen Ministers are commissioned in May after completing 50 hours of training. There is no cost to you.
What is the time commitment?
During training, candidates meet for two hours each week from January through May and complete weekly assignments between sessions.
After commissioning, Stephen Ministers meet twice a month on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30pm for ongoing training and small-group supervision. They also typically meet with a care receiver for about one hour each week.
Who is a good fit?
A good fit is someone who is a caring listener, dependable, spiritually grounded, and able to honor confidentiality while walking alongside someone in need.
What happens after I apply?
You’ll get two emails. The first one arrives within a few minutes of the short form and carries a link to the full application, so check your spam folder if you don’t see it. Once your application is in, you’ll receive a second link to schedule an interview with two to three members of North Metro Church’s Stephen Ministry Team. The interview lasts about one hour and is also a chance to ask questions about serving in Stephen Ministry. The Stephen Ministry Leadership Team will contact you by the end of October to let you know whether you’ve been selected for the January-May training program.
