What is Baptism?
Baptism is a public profession of the spiritual transformation that takes place when a person becomes a new creation in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). Baptism celebrates this miraculous act of God. God takes someone who was spiritually dead and makes them spiritually alive (Ephesians 2:1). This is the Gospel - the good news message from God: that although we enter this world spiritually dead, God still chooses to love us.
The Bible reveals that a relationship with God is a gift from Him. He doesn't give this gift to those who believe they deserve it but rather to those who realize they do not deserve it. This is grace - undeserved kindness. The Holy Spirit supernaturally opens our eyes to God's love, grace, and our desperate need for God's forgiveness and acceptance. Our natural response to this is faith in the person of Jesus Christ.
Therefore, before baptism, a person will have put his or her faith in the perfect life, atoning death, and validating resurrection of Jesus Christ. Once faith is declared, a submersion baptism follows.
